Are you marrying on a budget? Check out Oxfam’s online store for brides, grooms, bridesmaids and guests.

Legal necessities

Wedding banns are an announcement in church of your plan to marry. If you both live in Cowley parish we will read the banns for both of you here at St  Laurence’s. If one or both of you lives outside Cowley parish, you must contact the priest at your local Anglican church to ask to have your banns read.

This should be done at least three months before your wedding and no less than six weeks beforehand. Once this has been done, you will be given a certificate which you must pass to the Church office.

We will tell you when your Banns will be read. The reading of the Banns is a legal requirement so you are welcome to attend the church when it takes place.

If you change your address after booking the wedding date with St Laurence’s please tell us straight away.

You can video the wedding ceremony, but please be aware that music, songs and readings which are not in the authorised text of the marriage service may be subject to copyright laws. This means you will need permission from the copyright owners before you can video their material.

No more than three copies of the recording can be made and it must not be broadcast for any public purpose whatsoever.

The person making the recording should avoid filming anyone in the church, churchyard or surrounding properties who is not a member of the wedding party.

If either the bride or the bridegroom will be under the age of 18 on the day of the wedding then we will require a signed letter of consent from the parents or legal guardians stating:-

‘We, (names)……….., being the parents/legal guardians of (name)…….., do hereby give our consent to (name)……… marriage with (name)…….. at St. Laurence Church, Cowley on (date)……….

The cost of the wedding service all depends on what you would like to have included. A full list of the fees can be requested from the Church office.

Flowers, confetti and photographs

You may decorate the pews but please don’t use nails, pins, sticky tape, sticky pads or blue tak or anything else that might damage them.

Your photographer may take pictures during the ceremony using a flash. The wedding ceremony is a holy sacrament so we would like the photographer to be discreet.

Your guests may throw confetti outside the church building but away from the door so that it doesn’t blow inside.

Please contact the Church office to arrange a rehearsal. Ideally this will be arranged at least two weeks before your wedding.

You should discuss your choice of music and hymns with the Church office. You may need to provide the music or the sheet music for the organist yourselves. Please tell us as soon as possible if you would like an organist so that we can book one.

Here is a list of hymns that are good for weddings. Other suggestions are welcome.

All my hope on God is founded
All things bright and beautiful
Bind us together Lord
Come down, O love divine
Father, hear the prayer we offer
Father, Lord of all creation
Father of heaven, whose love profound
For the beauty of the earth
Give me oil in my lamp
Happy are they, they that love God
Immortal love for ever full
Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
Lord of all hopefulness
Lord divine, all love’s excelling
Love is his word, love is his way
Make me a channel of your peace
May the grace of Christ Our Saviour
Morning has broken
Now thank we all our God
O God our help in ages past
O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace
O Jesus, I have promised
O perfect love
O praise ye the Lord
O worship the King
Praise my soul the King of heaven
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Seek ye first, the Kingdom of God
Tell out my soul
The King of love my shepherd is
The Lord’s my shepherd
Thine be the glory
Through all the changing scenes of life
To God be the Glory
When all thy mercies O my God

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
